Khao San Overview

Khao San Road is a self contained area for backpacking enthusiasts, portrayed in the Alex Garland novel ‘The Beach’. Frequented mostly by the so-called ‘World’ travellers who choose to stay there and are content to drink at the open-front Bars and recount road tales to one another, Khao San’s popularity among Bangkok’s youth, means that locals now head there for evening fun, bringing a Thai and Asian flavour to the International mix.
Change may be inevitable, but Khao San still has this infectious atmosphere that creates great energy among the people, in the way they interact and enjoy its dynamics and culture, making it a must for travellers to visit, at least once.
Khao San Guide

Recent developments have upgraded the previously seedy gathering of cheap Guesthouses, Rice Shops and Bars, with new Boutique Hotels like Buddy Lodge, along with new Bars and International chains like Starbucks. Internet Cafes now jostle for space alongside Shops offering Hair-braiding, Tattooing, Body-piercing, used Books, Clothing, Jewellery and bootleg CD’s and DVD’s.
When you are ready to move on from Khao San Road, Bangkok’s Old City is within walking distance, including the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, the National Museum and Democracy Monument.

Without the benefit of a Skytrain or Metro service, the best way to avoid the traffic and have great fun, is to travel by Boat on the Chao Phraya River. On arrival at the Tha Phra Athit Pier, a short walk will take you into Chakrabongse Road, for a two hundred meter walk to the start of Khao San Road.
